Artist Statement

               As a survivor of domestic violence and trauma, I create art to find healing, strength, confidence, self-worth and value. Through mixed-media sculpture, I take my emotions out through the physical manipulations of materials. When I get to use my strength and physical body by beating on trash cans and metal, grinding away pieces of metal, sculpting softly and with precision to help calm the inner anger with epoxy putty to make fingers, for me art helps my healing process while also being physically, emotionally, and mentally involved in the making of every aspect of my work. I want to connect to survivors, those who know them, and abusers to share that we can grow, heal, and be a stronger version of ourselves.

               A lot of my work is about personal power, trusting my instincts, freeing me from whatever I find that may be binding me from potential growth, self-discovery and empowerment. It also helps me to choose and find my true authentic path and self.

 Hekate, a goddess whose origins are disputed for they find she even came before the Greek mythology. Some believe that Hekate had power in all domains despite there being other Gods or Goddess in that space. Hekate was for many became known as a protector of households and other things too.  I have personally look towards Hekate in my life and healing journey as she is the one that is known to be the “keeper of keys” and “breaker of chains.” She has also been known to be the one to bring the light into the darkness so people can help confront the hidden parts of themselves. Hekate is someone who for me makes me want to find the goddess and power within myself.

My work helps me find my authentic self. I want to reveal my true self and break away from all the masks, rules, other things we are made to feel when in a traumatic relationship. I want to be as powerful and as strong as a goddess, a warrior within my own self. I am finally free.
